Jobs of the HVAC Mechanical Engineer
Page content

The HVAC stands for Heating, ventilating and air-conditioning. Traditionally the mechanical engineers have mostly been employed as the HVAC engineers by most of the companies. This is because the HVAC is an important subject area of mechanical engineering. Of late, some special courses have started in the field of HVAC, hence for becoming a HVAC designer or engineer or consultant it is not compulsory for you to acquire degree in mechanical engineering. You could have obtained degree in any specific field and yet become HVAC engineer by doing a diploma course.

However, the mechanical engineers have distinct advantages of becoming the HVAC engineers. Here are some of these reasons:

  1. The main reason for this is that the subjects related to HVAC like thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, etc are important subjects of mechanical engineering branch.

  2. Further, for designing a separate subject is taught in details in mechanical engineering branch, thus the mechanical engineer can easily do designing of any product related to their field.

  3. Another important advantage with the mechanical engineers is that they are expert in implementation of the projects, which is very important quality required for implementing the HVAC projects. For implementing any project the mechanical engineers are thoroughly trained about various aspects of project management.

The mechanical engineers have excellent option for taking up the career in HVAC field, which has become highly lucrative of late. Though the candidates from other fields too can give full justice to this job, the mechanical engineers seem to be have been made for this job.

As a HVAC engineer, the main job of the mechanical engineer will be to carry out various heat load calculations in the building that has to be air-conditioned. Then they have to design the air-conditioning system suitable for the building. The HVAC engineer has to suggest the air-conditioning system of proper tonnage and type and also various other equipments required for the project. Finally, the HVAC engineer has to implement the HVAC project and commission it.

It is not that all these tasks will have to be carried out by a single HVAC engineer. Some personnel will carry out survey of the building, some will do calculations, some will do designing and others will do implementation of the project. The mechanical engineer can easily carry out all these HVAC tasks.
