Cost Effective Maintenance Now Enhances Roadway Safety and Performance Later

Ben Franklin's old adage as applied to roadways. "Pounds" of relatively inexpensive materials and procedures applied as preventive maintenance can improve safety and extend the useful life of pavements, as opposed to doing nothing and applying "tons" of costly and time consuming corrective reconstruction after structural failure. Preventive maintenance consists of treatments and procedures which preserve a road surface while it is still in good condition. Penny-wise procedures that can be done today include crack sealing, chip seals, slurry seals, micro surfacing, and thin overlays.
