By using structural engineering basics to define simple construction elements such as beams, columns, cables and plates, incredibly complex structures can be designed. A thorough understanding of structural and related engineering concepts such as stresses, strains, material properties, environmental effects, computer modeling, construction, manufacturing, and architecture are typically required to execute a successful design. The required engineering analysis is typically performed using computer modeling software, but in the case of Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, simple chains and imaging using mirror were successfully used in his design and analysis over 75 years ago. Future articles will address specific complex constructions.
