The IC 74LS 164 is basically a synchronous 8-bit shift register IC capable of interpreting the applied input clock pulses into serially shifting logic high levels at its 8 outputs. Once all of its outputs go high, using an external configuration the system may either be reset by switching OFF all the outputs suddenly or may be allowed to shut OFF one by one in the same serial order, until all the outputs are restored to their original position to repeat the cycle all over again.
