Fundamentals Of Pneumatics
Pneumatics is the study and technique that utilizes high pressure gas to obtain a mechanical movement. Compressed air is normally used to obtain pneumatic energy in industries. However, other inert gases at high pressures are also used. Pneumatics has widespread application in the construction and mining industries. A pneumatic drilling machine is designed to perform functions other than drilling, such as reaming, countersinking, and tapping small or large holes. A pneumatic drill, also called a jackhammer, is a portable machine driven by compressed air. Drill machines used in the construction industry are also powered hydraulically. They are normally used for drilling in rocks, breaking pavement, and other applications in the construction industry. There is a hammer that is driven by compressed air blasts. The air is supplied to the drill machine by a small compressor that is driven by an engine. It works like a chisel and hammer, by punching with the bit, and not by its rotation. The compressor is normally trailer mounted, and may include an electrical generator for provision of power to lights and electric tools. The noise of the air exhaust and the blows makes the pneumatic drill machines uncomfortable for the operator. Therefore, to ensure protection of ears, he should use earmuffs. Furthermore, an extended exposure to the distinct vibrations produced by the machine may impede blood circulation in the fingers.

Pneumatic Drills Advantages
Pneumatic drills present several advantages compared to other kinds of tools. Some of the advantages are:
Air tools are lightweight since the motors are small and light compared to the hydraulic or electric motors. Light weight causes lesser tiredness in the worker.
They are powerful, producing greater torque than similar electric tools.
Robust and long lasting. The moving parts are less than with the usual tools.
Easy to maintain. Since the moving parts are less, the maintenance is simple.
The operation is simple.
More economical. Pneumatic tools do not have electric motors due to which they are more economical than the electric machines.
The pneumatic drill machines can be used in sites where electricity does not exist. Thus, this machine is especially useful in rural areas where electric power may not be available.
These machines can also be conveniently utilized in moist environments, where use of electric powered devices may not be safe.

Applications for Pneumatic Drills
Pneumatic drills are utilized for drilling into solid substances like rocks. These are also used to break slabs and pavements. The functioning of pneumatic drills is different from other drills. The drill works to produce a chipping motion that is similar to a chisel and hammer action. Pneumatic drills are most suitable for use on flat surfaces that are immediately below the operator, like for walkways and pavements. The pneumatic drill obtains considerable force from the gravity that augments the bit pressure against the work. These machines are not basically designed for utilization on the slopes or walls. Operation on such positions is not suitable since the machine weight will require support in addition to the horizontal force required to force the tool against the work.
